June 2026
DID YOU KNOW HOW USEFUL A TOILET PAPER
DISPENSER CAN BE FOR SEWING ON BINDING?
Yay, June is here! In June I think of graduations, weddings and honeymoons... ah to be young and in love and moving on to a new stage of life. This month has some wonderful things we can do, including: Flag Day, Juneteenth, and Father's Day. Additionally, in the Clubhouse 4 Quilt Room, The Crazy Quilters have a workshop scheduled on June 13th featuring Grace Errea - Intro to Heat Set Applique'. Also, since the Emeritus classes will not be using our quilt room over the summer, we will have more opportunities to sew together in the quilt room with a variety of fun pop-up workshops provided by our very own quilt room supervisors. Watch for more specific information in e-blasts and in our June Newsletter. Very exciting! See you in the quilt room.
Rather than constantly looking at a computer screen, I prefer to look at hardcopies of quilting magazines. With a magazine, I recline in my easy chair and luxuriously thumb through the pages, reviewing new ideas and seeking out the pictures of all the yummy new quilts.
This month I received my Better Homes & Gardens American Patchwork Quilting Summer 2026 issue. With this year being the 250th birthday of the United States of America, there are lots of patterns and quilts featuring the red, white and blue theme. So many lovely quilts are printed in the magazine, I really enjoy looking at them. But what I really delight in, is going to the pages that show tips from readers. In this magazine it is called "Why Didn't I Think of That?" on page 6. On the bottom of the page there is a tip about using a toilet paper dispenser. My request for permission to include a picture of the tip in this tidbit was turned down by the magazine. Instead, I am including pictures from my sewing desk as I recently sewed binding to some quilts using the dispenser.. Whoever would have thought you could use a toilet paper dispenser to make sewing binding on a quilt easier?
This picture shows the dispenser I installed in my desk. I used command strips to adhere it in place so I would not have to drill any holes and damage my desk. I went to Amazon and ordered the most basic dispenser that only cost about $8.00.
The next pictures show how to employ the dispenser. The dispenser keeps the binding tidy and off the floor. The binding feeds out as you sew and so far it has been a very efficient method to control the binding strip as I sew it on to the quilt.
You can use empty toilet paper rollers to store your binding strips and then install the roller on the dispenser. For me, I decided just to use one paper roller over and over. I wrap the binding strip on the paper roller just before I am ready to sew the binding on to the quilt.
Have a great June and a wonderful summer. I plan to make this a tidbit free summer and plan to be back with another tidbit in September. Let me know if there is a topic you would like me to research and something that I can write up in a tidbit. Blessings to you and your family.
