May 2023
CITY OF LAGUNA HILLS
MEMORIAL DAY
HALF MARATHON, 5K, 10K

Honoring the USMC Dark Horse Battalion

My dog, Murray, and I walked the 5K again this year.  The Darkhorse Battalion is celebrated each year during the city's annual Memorial Day Half Marathon, which raises funds for Team Darkhorse, a community group that supports the battalion's Marines and their families.

The hook and ladder truck from our local OCFA Station 22 was at the finish line displaying the Flag.

During the race, banners of the 25 Darkhorse Marines who perished in Sangin, Afghanistan during a 2010 deployment are displayed on the streets along the race route.  It was the costliest deployment of a Marine combat unit since Vietnam.

After the event, I met Karen Robbins at the Darkhorse Battalion booth.  She oversees the Baby Brigade which delivers baskets to new moms and dads on base.  She said they would be thrilled to include our baby quilts in the Welcome Baby Baskets.  She will provide a list of other items they include and will add the Guild to the mailing list for baby shower events.  A few Guild members have expressed interest in making baby quilt.  Here’s your chance!
